Ergonomic & anti-fatigue matting terms
The vocabulary North American buyers and suppliers use, defined plainly, in US English, with the honesty we apply everywhere: no invented standards, no certification that doesn’t exist.
- ADA transition threshold
- The height and edge transition where a mat meets the floor, which affects whether wheeled equipment and mobility devices can cross it. Accessibility requirements are site-specific, so verify the exact requirement with your facility or accessibility authority rather than assuming a mat meets it.
- ANSI/ESD S20.20
- The North American program standard for an ESD control program. It sets how the overall system, mats, footwear, wrist straps and grounding, controls static, rather than a single mat "ohms" number; specific resistance values come from related test methods and your control plan.
- Anti-fatigue mat
- A cushioned floor mat designed to reduce the fatigue caused by standing for long periods on a hard surface such as concrete, by encouraging small leg-muscle movements.
- Antimicrobial additive
- A treatment some mats include that the maker says limits microbial growth on the mat surface. It is not a claim of infection prevention, and any such claim needs product-specific, regulated documentation (for example EPA registration); treat it as an addition to cleaning, never a replacement.
- Beveled edge
- A sloped, tapered mat edge (US spelling: beveled). CCOHS recommends sloped edges because they are less of a trip hazard and let carts roll on and off the mat more easily.
- Closed-cell foam
- Foam with sealed cells that resists absorbing liquids and holds its shape, used in many comfort and standing-desk mats.
- Coefficient of friction (COF)
- A unitless measure of slip resistance, the ratio of the force needed to slide a surface to the force pressing the surfaces together. Reported as static (SCOF) or dynamic (DCOF); higher generally means more traction.
- Compression deflection
- A measure of how much force it takes to compress a mat by a set amount, an indicator of firmness and support. Ask the supplier for the figure to compare mats by how they will feel and perform under load.
- Compression set
- How much a mat stays permanently flattened after being compressed over time. A lower compression set means the mat keeps its cushioning and resists packing down; request the data to judge durability.
- Conductive (ESD)
- An ESD material classification with lower resistance that moves static charge quickly. Whether conductive or static-dissipative is right is set by your process and ESD control plan; confirm the measured range for the exact product.
- DCOF / SCOF
- Dynamic and Static Coefficient of Friction, the North American measures of slip resistance. (The UK/EU Pendulum Test Value, or PTV, is not used on US specifications.)
- Drainage mat
- A mat with flow-through holes that let water, grease and debris fall below the standing surface, essential for wet commercial-kitchen and wash-down floors.
- Durometer (Shore A)
- A measure of a material’s hardness. Anti-fatigue mats are often quoted in Shore A durometer; a firmer mat supports heavy standing and rolling loads, a softer one is more forgiving for light stationary work.
- Ergonomic (matting)
- Relating to fitting the job to the person. Ergonomic floor matting is anti-fatigue matting chosen and placed as part of a workstation ergonomics effort, alongside working height, movement and footwear.
- ESD / anti-static mat
- Static-controlling matting made from conductive or static-dissipative compounds and grounded (typically per ANSI/ESD S20.20) to give static a controlled path away from sensitive electronics.
- General Duty Clause
- OSHA Section 5(a)(1), requiring employers to provide a workplace "free from recognized hazards." OSHA has no anti-fatigue mat standard; matting can support efforts to reduce recognized standing-related hazards.
- GREENGUARD
- A certification that a specific product meets low chemical-emission limits for indoor air quality. It applies to the certified product, not a brand in general.
- GREENGUARD Gold
- A stricter tier of GREENGUARD low-emission certification intended for sensitive environments such as schools and healthcare. It certifies low chemical emissions only, not that a product is "non-toxic" or chemical-free; ask for the certificate for the specific product.
- Grounding cord
- The cord and resistor that bond an ESD mat to a common ground point, giving static a controlled path away. An ESD mat only works when properly grounded; confirm the grounding method and hardware with the supplier.
- Insulative
- A material with resistance high enough that static charge does not readily flow through it, the opposite end of the scale from conductive. ESD control aims to avoid insulative surfaces where static-sensitive work is done.
- Interlocking / modular tile
- Anti-fatigue tiles that connect to cover long runs and let worn or damaged sections be replaced individually, common on assembly and production lines.
- LEED
- Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a US green-building rating system. Recycled or low-emitting mats may contribute to specific LEED credits with supporting documentation.
- Low-VOC
- Low volatile-organic-compound emissions, i.e. low chemical off-gassing indoors. Ask for VOC test results or an emissions certification to substantiate the claim.
- NFSI High-Traction
- A slip-resistance certification from the US National Floor Safety Institute. It certifies traction, not fatigue reduction, no standard certifies "anti-fatigue" performance.
- Nitrile (NBR) rubber
- A synthetic rubber that resists oils, coolants and grease far better than standard PVC or vinyl foam, making it the default compound for industrial and commercial-kitchen anti-fatigue mats.
- NSF-listed
- Recognition that a product meets NSF sanitation criteria for food-equipment environments, a useful signal for commercial-kitchen matting alongside drainage and grease resistance.
- NSF/ANSI 52
- The NSF sanitation standard covering supplemental flooring for food-service environments, addressing cleanability and resistance to microbial growth. It is a sanitation listing, not a slip-resistance or anti-fatigue rating; confirm the specific product is listed.
- Off-gassing
- The release of volatile chemicals, and sometimes odor, from a material into indoor air, most noticeable when a mat is new. It matters most in enclosed rooms; low-VOC materials and emissions certifications address it.
- Open-cell foam
- Foam with interconnected cells that can absorb liquids and compress more readily than closed-cell foam. Softer underfoot but less suited to wet or heavy-duty use.
- Polyurethane (PU)
- A resilient, shape-retaining foam often used in premium office and standing-desk mats; it resists edge curl and is available PVC-free.
- PVC foam
- Foam made from polyvinyl chloride (vinyl), light, inexpensive and easy to mold into contoured, beveled shapes. Suited to dry, lighter-duty standing; it can swell or degrade where oil or grease is present, and some buyers avoid PVC for indoor-air and end-of-life reasons.
- PVC-free
- Made without polyvinyl chloride, chosen for indoor air quality, odor and end-of-life recyclability. The label only says what is absent; always confirm the replacement material.
- Ramped edge
- A tapered edge or add-on ramp piece that lets carts, pallet jacks and feet cross onto a mat or tile safely. Ramped and beveled edges reduce trip risk; CCOHS notes improperly installed matting is itself a trip hazard.
- Recycled PET (rPET)
- Mat faces made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate, the plastic used for drinking bottles, common on softer, carpet-style mats.
- Recycled rubber
- Rubber matting made largely from reclaimed material, commonly scrap tires ground and re-bonded. Durable and grippy; ask the supplier for the actual recycled-content percentage.
- Resistance point to point (Rtt)
- A measurement of electrical resistance between two points on an ESD mat surface. With resistance to ground, it characterizes an ESD mat; the target range depends on the standard and product, so confirm the measured value.
- Resistance to ground (Rtg)
- A measurement of electrical resistance from a point on an ESD mat to its ground connection, used to confirm the mat drains static safely. The acceptable range depends on the standard and application, so verify it against your ESD control plan.
- Shore A hardness
- The durometer scale most often used for anti-fatigue mats. A higher Shore A number means a firmer mat; see Durometer.
- Static-dissipative
- An ESD material classification with higher resistance than conductive, letting static charge drain away in a slow, controlled way. The exact resistance range depends on the standard and your ESD control plan, verify it for the specific product.
- Welding-safe mat
- A mat documented as spark, flame or heat resistant for welding and fabrication stations. Ordinary foam or PVC anti-fatigue mats are not automatically welding-safe; comfort and spark/heat resistance are separate specs, so verify the product-specific documentation for your exposure.
