What nitrile rubber is

Nitrile rubber, or NBR (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber), is a synthetic rubber engineered for resistance to petroleum products, animal fats and many solvents. That is the whole point of using it in a mat: where cooking oil, cutting fluid or hydraulic oil would swell, warp or slicken a standard PVC foam or natural-rubber mat, a nitrile mat keeps its shape and grip for far longer.

Grease resistance is a property of the material, separate from slip resistance and separate from any sanitation listing. A mat can be nitrile and still need its own slip and NSF data confirmed, so treat the compound as one part of the spec, not the whole answer.

Where nitrile is specified

Nitrile vs standard PVC foam

The honest comparison is about environment, not a winner. On a dry office or light-duty floor, a PVC foam or polyurethane mat is comfortable and cost-effective, and nitrile’s oil resistance goes to waste. Add oil, grease or coolant, though, and PVC foam tends to swell, compress and turn slick, while nitrile holds up, so the cheaper mat can end up costing more in replacements.

That is the real trade-off: pay less up front for foam on a dry floor, or pay more for nitrile where oil would otherwise shorten a mat’s life. Kitchen vs industrial use

Both settings choose nitrile for grease and oil, but they ask for different things around it. Kitchens prioritize a drainage format that lifts out for wash-down, a surface that stays grippy when wet and greasy, and, ideally, an NSF listing for food zones. Industrial floors prioritize durometer, load rating and chemical compatibility with the specific coolants and solvents in use, plus a robust edge or ramp system for carts.

One caveat for fabrication: standard nitrile is not a welding surface. Where sparks or spatter reach the mat, specify a separate welding-safe grade for that station, and keep the anti-fatigue nitrile mat where the oil is.

Thickness, edges and cleaning

Nitrile mats follow the same anti-fatigue fundamentals as any other: aim for supportive resilience rather than the softest option, choose beveled edges to reduce trip risk and let carts roll on and off, and size the mat to cover the full standing zone. Industrial thicknesses commonly run from about 1/2" to 1" (about 13-25 mm); confirm the figure against your rolling loads.

Cleaning is a nitrile strength: the surface wipes down and tolerates grease far better than standard rubber. In food zones, pick a mat that lifts out so the floor beneath can be sanitized, and confirm your cleaning agents are compatible with the compound.

Honest limitations

  • Nitrile costs more up front than PVC foam, so on a dry, light-duty floor it can be more mat than the job needs.
  • Oil resistance is not spark or heat resistance, welding and grinding stations need a welding-safe grade instead.
  • "Grease-resistant" and "grease-proof" are not the same, confirm which the product is for your zone.
  • Chemical resistance varies by compound and blend, always match it to your specific fluids, not a general claim.
