UK workplace guidance

A mat supports the risk assessment. It does not replace it.

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 apply to most UK workplaces. Regulation 12 requires workplace floors and traffic routes to be suitable, in good condition and free from obstructions, with effective drainage where necessary. The correct response depends on the site risk assessment; the law does not prescribe a particular anti-fatigue mat.

What this means when specifying matting

A loose mat must not introduce the very trip or slip risk the floor rules are intended to control. Specify a stable backing, bevelled or ramped exposed edges, enough coverage for normal movement, and a surface and compound suited to dry, wet, oily or static-sensitive work. Inspect it and replace it if it curls, tears or moves.

No anti-fatigue mat is “HSE-approved”. Ask for evidence relevant to the actual job: material, thickness, edge profile, slip data, chemical compatibility and, where applicable, electrical resistance.

Choose by environment

Start with what is on the floor

Standing time matters, but contamination, traffic and the shape of the working zone usually decide the material and format.

Work areaWhat to specify
Dry workstationsSupportive closed-surface matting with bevelled edges and a stable backing.
Oil, grease or coolantA nitrile or verified oil-resistant compound; request the chemical-resistance data.
Wet or washdown areasDrainage matting that lets liquid leave the standing surface and can be cleaned underneath.
Long lines or changing layoutsInterlocking tiles or runners with ramped edges and replaceable sections.
Electronics and EPA zonesA measured ESD resistance range, grounding method and compatibility with the site ESD plan.

UK FAQ

Buying anti-fatigue mats in UK

Clear answers on specification, workplace duties, quotations and supply.

Are anti-fatigue mats required by UK law?

No specific UK regulation requires an anti-fatigue mat, and HSE does not approve or certify them. Employers must assess workplace risks and keep floors and traffic routes suitable, in good condition and free from obstructions. A mat may be one useful control for a fixed standing workstation when it is correctly specified and maintained.

What sizes are anti-fatigue mats supplied in the UK?

UK workplace mats are normally specified in millimetres or metres. Standard workstation sizes suit single standing positions, while runners, cut lengths and interlocking tiles cover production lines and larger areas. Measure the complete standing and movement zone rather than only the operator’s footprints.

Which mat is suitable for oil or coolant?

Choose a nitrile rubber or otherwise verified oil-resistant grade and request chemical-resistance information for the exact fluid involved. A generic rubber or foam mat may soften, swell or lose performance when exposed to oils and coolants.

Can UK businesses pay online in pounds?

Yes. Approved quotations can be paid securely online in GBP. USD and EUR payment are also available for international procurement teams.

Can you quote for several workstations or a production line?

Yes. Send the number and dimensions of the stations, or the length and width of the run, together with the floor conditions and shift pattern. We can specify individual mats, runners or a modular layout and quote against the complete requirement.
