Do Anti-Fatigue Mats Meet a Standard?
No standard certifies anti-fatigue performance. What OSHA, CCOHS, NFSI, NSF, ANSI/ESD and GREENGUARD actually cover, and how to verify a claim.

Short answer: no single standard certifies “anti-fatigue” performance. There is no test, certification body, or government program that grades how well a mat reduces standing fatigue. When a mat carries a real, meaningful certification, it certifies something else, its slip resistance, its sanitation, its static control, or its chemical emissions, not fatigue relief.

That matters because “certified” and “standard” get used loosely in mat marketing. Knowing what each body actually covers lets you separate a genuine, verifiable claim from a halo that means nothing. This guide maps the standards that may apply to a anti-fatigue mat, and exactly what to ask a supplier to prove each one.
Guidance, standard, certification: three different things
Most confusion in this category comes from three words being used interchangeably in marketing. They are not the same, and the difference decides what a supplier can actually prove.
- Guidance is advice from an authority. CCOHS guidance on mat firmness and sloped edges, or OSHA’s ergonomics material, tells you what good practice looks like. Nobody audits a product against it, and nothing can be “certified to” it.
- A standard is a published document specifying requirements or test methods. ASTM D3574 (test methods for flexible cellular materials) and CSA Z1004 (workplace ergonomics management) are standards. A standard existing does not mean any given mat was tested against it.
- A certification is a third party attesting that a specific product met a standard’s requirements, with a certificate you can request by product number. NFSI High-Traction and NSF listing work this way.
So a supplier can honestly say “tested to ASTM D3574” if they hold the report. They cannot honestly say “certified anti-fatigue,” because no standard defines that performance and no body certifies it.
One further trap: CSA Group plays two unrelated roles. It develops Canadian standards (including CSA Z1004), and it separately operates as an accredited testing laboratory — an OSHA-recognized NRTL. “Tested at CSA Group” therefore means a lab did the testing; it does not mean the product meets a CSA standard for matting, because no CSA matting standard exists.
Which standards may apply instead?
A mat is one product that can touch several unrelated standards at once. Each covers a narrow property.
- OSHA sets employer duties for the workplace, not product certifications. There is no OSHA anti-fatigue mat standard and no “OSHA-approved” mat. See does OSHA require anti-fatigue mats? for the full framing.
- CCOHS (Canada) offers practical selection and installation guidance, warning against overly soft or thick mats and poorly placed edges. It is guidance, not a certification you can put on a product.
- CSA Z1004 (Canada) is a genuine published standard — Workplace ergonomics: a management and implementation standard, current edition CSA Z1004:24, published February 2024 and superseding Z1004-12 (R2021). It sets requirements for running ergonomics as a management system, so matting can support conformance with it, but it specifies nothing about mats as products and no mat can be “CSA certified” for fatigue. - NFSI certifies slip resistance (high-traction) only. An NFSI-certified mat has been measured for traction; it says nothing about fatigue relief.
- NSF covers sanitation and cleanability for food-service products (for example, supplemental flooring under NSF/ANSI 52), where applicable. It is a hygiene listing, not a slip or fatigue rating. It matters most for a commercial kitchen mat.
- ANSI/ESD (notably ANSI/ESD S20.20) covers static control for ESD mats, where applicable. It confirms a mat is part of a grounded static-control system, relevant for a laboratory or electronics mat.
- GREENGUARD / FloorScore certify low chemical emissions for indoor air quality, where applicable, useful for a PVC-free office mat. They certify emissions, not that a product is “non-toxic.”

Note the pattern: everything measurable about a mat is either a material property or an adjacent safety property. Nothing in the table measures fatigue relief, because no method for certifying it exists.
What you can measure instead
Because fatigue relief itself is not certifiable, shift the conversation to properties that are. These are the figures a capable manufacturer can actually produce:

A supplier who answers these with numbers is selling on evidence. One who answers with “premium,” “ergonomic” or “OSHA-compliant” is selling on adjectives, which is your cue to ask again.
How do you verify a product-level claim?
A certification only counts for the specific product that holds it, never the brand as a whole. Before you believe a claim:
- Ask for the certificate or listing for the exact model and SKU, not a brand-level statement.
- Confirm the certifying body and the property certified (slip, sanitation, static, emissions), and check it is the property you actually need.
- For slip claims, ask whether the number is static or dynamic coefficient of friction, and get the test result rather than a “slip-resistant” label.
- For ESD claims, ask for the resistance range and how the mat is grounded, an ungrounded dissipative mat is not doing its job.
- Treat any “anti-fatigue certified” or “OSHA-approved” language as a red flag, because no such certification exists.
Which mat certification claims are myths?
“OSHA-approved anti-fatigue mat.” OSHA does not test, approve, certify, or endorse mats, and has no anti-fatigue mat standard. Any product sold as “OSHA-approved” is using language OSHA itself disavows.
“NFSI-certified anti-fatigue mat.” NFSI certifies slip resistance, not fatigue relief. A mat can be genuinely NFSI High-Traction certified and that tells you only about traction, it is not evidence of any anti-fatigue benefit.
“NSF means slip-safe.” No. NSF listing addresses sanitation and cleanability for food-service environments. A mat can be NSF-listed and still need its own slip data confirmed separately.
“GREENGUARD means non-toxic.” GREENGUARD (and GREENGUARD Gold) certify low chemical emissions into indoor air. That is a specific, useful thing, but it is not a blanket “non-toxic,” “chemical-free,” or “safe” stamp.
So do anti-fatigue mats meet a standard?
No standard certifies anti-fatigue performance, so any “anti-fatigue certified” or “OSHA-approved” mat claim is marketing, not fact. The real certifications, NFSI (slip), NSF (sanitation), ANSI/ESD (static), GREENGUARD/FloorScore (emissions), each cover one narrow property, and only for the exact product that holds them.
