This is a format decision, not a quality one. Single mats are simpler for one fixed station; interlocking tiles fit lines, multiple stations, reconfigurable layouts and replaceable sections. Neither is “better” on its own, the right pick follows the shape of your floor and how often it changes.

Treat this as a starting frame, not a verdict, both formats come in the same materials, so the format choice is separate from the compound choice.

When to choose a single mat

  • One fixed workstation. A single anti-fatigue mat sized to the standing zone is the simplest, tidiest answer.
  • A continuous walkway or standing run. A cut-to-length runner beats a grid of tiles where the zone is one path rather than separate positions.
  • Easiest cleaning and lowest complexity. Fewer joins to keep flat, one piece to lift, less to stock and specify.
  • Wet, oily or ESD single stations. Single mats come in drainage, nitrile and ESD grades too, so a special-condition fixed spot does not force you into tiles.

When to choose interlocking tiles

  • Lines and multi-station floors. Tiles build to the exact length of an assembly or production line and cover discrete positions station by station.
  • Layouts that change. When stations move with the product, tiles lift and relay instead of being replaced.
  • Replaceable sections. Swap a single worn or oil-damaged tile rather than the whole run, if the supplier stocks matching tiles.
  • Large industrial rollouts. Tiles palletize and freight more flexibly than long, heavy rolls.

Edges, ramps and trip safety

Whichever format you pick, the edge is the safety feature. A single mat needs beveled, non-curl edges and a reliable non-slip backing; a tile system needs ramp and corner pieces on every exposed side and joins kept tight and flat. CCOHS notes that improperly installed matting is itself a trip hazard, so budget for the ramps and replace any mat or tile that lifts, curls or packs down. None of this is an “OSHA-approved” attribute, OSHA has no anti-fatigue mat standard; it is simply good installation practice.

  1. A recommendation for your actual floor, whether your standing zones are discrete stations or one continuous run.
  2. For tiles: individual replacement-tile availability, lead time, and ramp/corner pieces for every exposed edge.
  3. For a single mat or runner: the size to cover the full standing zone and the edge/backing detail.
  4. The compound or grade (nitrile, ESD, drainage) matched to your floor, in whichever format you choose.
  5. Weight, cleaning method and freight for the quantity, plus cost per station including ramps and spares.

Are interlocking tiles better than a single mat?

For long runs and changing layouts, usually yes: tiles let you replace a damaged section instead of a whole mat and adapt as stations move. For a single fixed workstation with a stable footprint, one mat is simpler, has fewer seams to trap debris, and is quicker to lift for cleaning.

Do interlocking mat tiles come apart?

Good-quality tiles with well-made connectors stay locked under normal foot and cart traffic. Separation is usually a symptom of undersized connectors, worn tiles, or heavy turning loads. Any gap that opens between tiles is a trip hazard and should be closed or the section replaced.

Are tiles cheaper than a single mat?

Not usually per square foot up front, but often cheaper over time on large footprints, because you replace damaged sections rather than whole mats. Tiles also ship in cartons rather than as bulky rolls, which can cut freight cost on multi-station orders.
