Industrial anti-fatigue mats for Irish workplaces
Choose industrial matting by the real standing task, contaminants, movement and traffic—not by softness alone. This guide covers factories, warehouses, packing stations and production lines in Ireland.
The practical answer
A good industrial mat supports movement while separating the worker from a hard floor. It must also remain stable, fit the whole working zone and tolerate whatever reaches the floor.
No single construction suits dry assembly, oily machining, wet food production and an ESD-controlled area. Treat each as a different specification.
Start with six site facts
Before looking at a catalogue, record what the worker does and what reaches the floor. These six facts prevent most specification mistakes.
Contaminants
Water, oil, coolant, grease, chemicals, swarf or food debris.
Standing pattern
Continuous or intermittent standing, shift length and task rotation.
Movement zone
Normal steps, turning, reach and whether several people share the area.
Traffic
Pedestrians, chairs, carts, pallet trucks and crossing frequency.
Cleaning
Method, chemicals, temperature, frequency and access underneath.
Special controls
ESD/EPA, hygiene, hot work, fire behaviour or colour zoning.
Match the mat to the work area
| Work area | Likely starting point | Confirm before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Dry production or assembly | Closed surface; stable cushioning; bevelled or ramped edges | Standing duration, movement zone, cleaning method |
| Wet processing or washdown | Open drainage profile and compatible compound | Liquid type, flow route, underside cleaning, wet test evidence |
| Oil, coolant or grease | Verified oil-resistant compound, often nitrile-rich | Exact fluid, concentration, temperature and exposure time |
| Warehouse packing station | Stable surface sized for turning and normal reach | Trolley routes, stool/chair use, edge crossings |
| Electronics or EPA | Defined resistance range and grounding method | Whole ESD control plan, footwear and verification |
| Welding or hot work | Product-specific fire and hot-material evidence | Process, spark/slag exposure and applicable test method |
Warehouse and packing-station matting
A packing-station mat should cover the operator's normal turning and reach zone, not only the space directly beneath their feet. If the worker repeatedly steps on and off an edge, a larger mat or modular run may be safer and more useful.
Map trolley and pallet-truck routes separately. Standard cushioned mats are not automatically suitable for small hard wheels or heavy rolling loads. Keep the route clear where possible; otherwise ask for product-level load and transition evidence.
For longer production areas, compare interlocking tiles, runners and individual stations. Replaceable modules can suit changing layouts, but every exposed edge and junction still needs consideration.
Irish workplace context
Irish workplace law does not prescribe anti-fatigue mats. Regulation 9 of the General Application Regulations addresses floor condition and stability, while Regulation 17 addresses freedom of movement at the workstation. HSA guidance also discusses the health effects of prolonged standing and the need for seating or other ergonomic support where appropriate.
A mat can therefore be one risk-based control, provided it does not create movement, raised-edge, cleaning or traffic problems. Read the full Irish workplace-law guide before recording the decision.
Evidence to request from the supplier
- Exact material and construction—not simply “rubber” or “foam”.
- Dimensions, thickness tolerances and the complete edge solution.
- Chemical compatibility for the actual liquid and exposure conditions.
- Relevant slip, fire or electrical results with test method and conditions.
- Cleaning instructions and compatibility with the site process.
- Warranty, inspection advice, replaceable parts and expected limitations.

Industrial matting questions
The practical details Irish buyers ask before specifying and ordering.
Are industrial anti-fatigue mats required in Ireland?
No. Irish law does not universally mandate anti-fatigue mats. Employers must assess risks and choose suitable controls. Matting may be useful for a fixed standing task, but it should form part of the wider ergonomic and floor-safety assessment.
What mat is suitable for standing on concrete all day?
Start with the task and movement zone rather than thickness alone. For a dry fixed station, a stable resilient mat with safe edges may be appropriate. Also assess task variation, workstation height, footwear and opportunities to move or sit.
Can pallet trucks or trolleys travel over anti-fatigue mats?
Only if the product and transition are designed for that traffic. Soft mats and raised edges can obstruct small wheels. Keep wheeled routes clear or specify a load-rated modular surface and ramped transition supported by supplier evidence.
Do you supply custom sizes to Ireland?
Projects can be quoted as standard mats, cut lengths or modular layouts depending on the range and site. Send dimensions, floor conditions, quantity and delivery location so the appropriate format can be confirmed.
Can I get a delivered quotation in euro?
Yes. Request a delivered EUR quotation for the site. Freight, lead time and applicable taxes are confirmed before order rather than assumed in a blanket web price.
How should an industrial mat be cleaned?
Follow the exact manufacturer instructions and check compatibility with the site chemicals. Include the floor beneath the mat, inspect edges and movement, and replace any section that curls, tears, compacts or no longer stays stable.
